Partys at my house have a secret weapon. Every Saturday for the past few months, my entire block has been overflowing with people dancing to enormous bass lines and fat beats. This wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary if I wasn’t the DJ. Even me being the DJ still isn’t very out of the ordinary, but every song that I play at these beat-fests is made by either me or one of my friends. We started making beats three summers ago. The idea came to us when we were listening to a local rapper. His beats were made up from samples from classic rock, an example of this type of beat is in Lil’ Wayne’s “Help!” where he samples the line “Help!” from the classic beatles song to make a rap beat. We were jammin’ out when my friend Tom said: “You know you can make beats so damn easy”. I thought he was just talking out of his ass when my other friends asked him what he meant.
See, Tom always has something clever up his sleeve. He’s the one that always has the good ideas, the money makers. Tom booted up his lap top and we all gathered around. Nobody knew what the hell he was talking about… was Tom secretly a rap artist? Tom opened the web browser and went to the website called “Sonic Producer”. Since he is a member there, they give him unlimited access to their top of the line online beat maker. This thing is a beast! It has a 16 track sequencer just like any desktop software. We spent HOURS going through the preset sound library.
We all took our turns making beats, and if we didn’t know how to make a certain beat, they have free video tutorials with membership to the site. Since then, we’ve been making sick beats non-stop… and to show them off we started having these “beat parties”. See, we’re not rappers or anything. In fact, none of us are even very good at computers. But this program made it easy enough for ANYBODY to make their own beats. Hell, even my little sister makes her own beats now! Seriously!
